Tenn. company says cost from ash spill could reach $975M, recovery will take 'several years'

The nation's largest public utility now says cleaning up a massive coal ash spill will cost as much as $975 million and could take several years.

The Tennessee Valley Authority made those disclosures Friday in a financial report.

More than 5 million cubic feet of coal ash burst through a retaining wall last December at the plant 40 miles west of Knoxville, damaging or destroying about two dozen homes.

The new estimate for the cleanup of the Kingston Fossil Plant ash disaster is $150 million higher than before, and the agency says that could change again.

The agency says it still doesn't know the extent of the environmental damage or what will be needed to fix it.

TVA says it has spent $77 million through the end of March.
